New Computers!

We’ve had all our student computers upgraded over the break and have also recieved 10 additional ones! That makes a total of 20 computers available for student use in Hamilton Library. We have arranged the booking system as follows:
Computers 1-12 can be booked for a total of 2 hours per day by either individual students or by classes. Computers 13-17 are available for bookings by individual students only. And computers 18-20 can’t be booked but are Express Terminals for printing, checking the library catalogue and 10 minute emails. Students should be made aware that they can no longer use floppy discs but should purchase either a USB/Flash drive or writable CD-Roms.

Hamilton survives the storm

Hamilton TAFE sustained only minor damage in the recent stormy weather over the long weekend. This was surprising due to heavy flooding in areas close by. Much of the damage was to the carpark and due to the fact that we were without power. The library just had some very wet carpet and one chair. Things have now returned to normal.

Hunter TAFE Libraries support Mobile Muster

There are over 16 million mobile phones and batteries sitting around in homes and offices.  Based on market research of mobile phone ownership behaviour, Hunter Institute students have over 33,500 mobile phones to recycle now (Source: Mobile Muster Market Research 2007).  This excludes any phones that are kept as a back-up or spare.   MobileMuster is the official recycling program of the mobile telecommunications industry.  This world-leading recycling program is unique in that it is the only voluntary whole-of-industry led and funded product stewardship initiative in the electrical industry sector.  The overall aim of MobileMuster is to prevent mobile phones, batteries and accessories ending up in landfill where they can harm the environment.Hunter Institute Libraries are supporting the Institute’s mobile phone recycling program by providing a collection point for unused mobile phones. A collection box has been placed in the library next to the TV/Video Booking Diaries. We have 10 Mobile Muster Mouse Mats to give away to the first 10 people to bring us their old mobile phone (but only if they can say “10 Mobile Muster Mouse Mats” ten times very quickly).

Movements in the Library

Over the holidays we’ve had some major changes in the setup of Hamilton TAFE Library. The videos have been moved to the area where the photocopier/printers were and the photocopier/printers and the Reference sections have been moved to the walls around the student computers. We feel that this wil help reduce some of the noise in the library by concentrating the machinery in one area and will make it easier for teachers to come in and select a video/DVD. Let us know your thoughts on the changes, in particular if you feel it’s a change for the better or worse.
